Alaska Expedition Ship Hit by GI Outbreak
CDC confirms 12 of 90 sickened aboard National Geographic Sea Bird on a May 26–31 Alaska Inside Passage sailing, with no risk to mainstream cruise passengers.
Twelve fell ill aboard Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Sea Bird, an expedition vessel with no risk to standard cruise passengers.
🌊 Cruise 101: Lindblad Expeditions operates small National Geographic-branded expedition ships carrying 60–90 guests to remote destinations, not the large vessels operated by mainstream cruise lines.
Nine passengers and three crew reported vomiting, diarrhea, and fever on the May 26–31 voyage.
The cause is unknown.
Per the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program, norovirus is the most common culprit in cruise GI outbreaks.
Lindblad activated cleaning and isolation protocols.
The Sea Bird is back in service.
❓ Should mainstream cruisers worry? No. This is one 90-guest expedition vessel. Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizer before meals.

Crew Member Dies on St. Kitts Volcano Trail
Wang Zyuan, 33, a crew member from Rhapsody of the Seas, was found dead June 1 on Mount Liamuiga after going missing May 27.
A Royal Caribbean crew member died on a solo volcano hike, ending a five-day search involving police, military, K-9 units, and volunteers.
Wang Zyuan called emergency services May 27 to report being lost, then lost contact. The St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force confirmed his body was recovered June 1. Cause of death is under investigation.
Royal Caribbean's own excursion listing calls Mount Liamuiga "extremely strenuous" and warns guests with cardiac, respiratory, or orthopedic conditions to avoid it.
📌 Worth knowing: Never hike remote island trails alone. Always leave your trail name and expected return time with guest services before disembarking.
🏝 PORT CHANGES

New Santorini Cruise Arrival Rules for Summer
Santorini's Municipal Port Fund approved rules routing 70% of cruise passengers through Fira Bay's Old Port and capping Athinios arrivals at 30%, increasing cable car demand.
Expect longer cable car waits in Santorini this summer. The island's new arrival policy is already in effect.
At least 70% of passengers must now disembark at Ormos Firon (Fira Bay).
No more than 30% may arrive via Athinios, which many passengers previously used to bypass the cable car.
The policy is already in effect until amended.
🎯 What this means for you: Take an early tender and go straight to the cable car. Ship-sponsored excursions may route through Athinios.

$5 Million Lawsuit Over Carnival's Hot Pool Deck
Florida man Jorge Luis Alverio Nunez is suing Carnival Cruise Line for more than $5 million after suffering second-degree burns walking barefoot on the Carnival Magic's pool deck in May 2025.
A Florida man is suing Carnival for $5 million, alleging the Carnival Magic's pool deck reached temperatures capable of causing second-degree burns within seconds of contact.
Jorge Luis Alverio Nunez filed suit in the Southern District of Florida, claiming he walked roughly 20 steps from the pool to his lounge chair when the deck surface burned both feet. He alleges Carnival failed to post warnings, monitor temperatures, or require footwear in high-heat zones. ABC News obtained the complaint.
The lawsuit cites at least 25 prior burn incidents on Carnival decks between 2019 and 2025, plus 42 passenger complaints about excessively hot surfaces. The complaint alleges the deck material, API Syntheteak polyresin, has had documented heat warnings from the manufacturer since 2014.
Carnival has not issued a public statement. The case has been filed and will proceed toward trial or settlement.
🛟 What to do if this concerns you: If you are sailing on any Carnival ship, bring water shoes or sandals for pool deck use. Barefoot walking on dark deck surfaces in direct sun can reach dangerous temperatures on any cruise line, not just Carnival.
INCIDENT
Wrong Carnival Passenger Gets Banned
A Carnival passenger was placed on the Carnival Corporation no-sail list for a P&O incident he never triggered and cleared after a week, with his booking reinstated before the family's sailing.
A database error flagged the wrong passenger for an incident on a ship he had never boarded, nearly wiping out a family's summer vacation.
The guest received an email removing him from an upcoming Carnival sailing for an alleged P&O Cruises incident.
He had never sailed P&O.
Carnival told him the ban was final with no appeal process.
After about a week, Carnival reinstated the booking.
No compensation was reported.
This is the second mistaken-identity incident on a Carnival Corporation ship in 2026.
The first mistaken-identity:
On January 5, 2026, federal agents mistakenly stormed a Carnival cruise cabin at PortMiami
Handcuffed Coast Guard veteran Jose Martinez.
Agents deleted his wife's video of the raid
Detained Martinez for 90 minutes before realizing the identity error and releasing him.
📌 Worth knowing: Carnival Corporation shares no-sail data across all nine brands, so a ban from one affects all of them. If you get an unexpected notice, contact both the brand you booked and the one that issued the flag.
🧭 TRAVEL HACK
NOTICE
Research the Trail Before You Leave the Ship
Wang Zyuan's death on Mount Liamuiga is a reminder that solo port hikes carry serious risk. Royal Caribbean's own site labels the trail "extremely strenuous."
Check trail difficulty before any independent port excursion, download trail for offline access, save local emergency services information to phone, never hike remote terrain alone, and leave your route with guest services before disembarking.
❓ What to do if you miss the ship: Call the cruise line's port agent immediately. The number is in your daily planner. Port agents can arrange travel to the next port.

POLICY UPDATE
Disney Changes Wine, Walls, and Selfie Sticks
Disney Cruise Line rolled out three policy changes starting June 3: wine limited to one bottle per adult, hallway decorations restricted to the stateroom door, and selfie sticks capped at 18 inches.
Disney rewrote three guest policies, and the wine cut is getting the most pushback.
Wine cut to one bottle
Guests 21+ may bring one 750ml bottle at embarkation, down from two.
Port-purchased alcohol is held until disembarkation.
Corkage fee drops from $29 to $20.
Hallway decor banned from corridor walls and ceilings
Decorations must stay on the stateroom door.
Fish extenders remain permitted.
Selfie sticks capped at 18 inches while onboard.
Full fleet rollout complete June 8.
🎯 What this means for you: Pack one bottle of wine in your carry-on at embarkation. Port-purchased wine stays in ship storage until disembarkation day.
NOTICE
John Heald Is Stepping Back From Social Media
Carnival brand ambassador John Heald announced he is scaling back from up to nine hours of daily Facebook responses after 40 years with Carnival Cruise Line.
Carnival's most recognizable public face is shifting away from social media and back toward ships, with a new email address coming this month for guest questions.
John has served as Carnival's brand ambassador since 2007 and currently spends up to nine hours a day answering passenger questions on Facebook. He says he wants to spend more of that time in person on ships with guests and crew.
Carnival plans to launch a dedicated email address later in June as a new channel for guests to submit questions directly to John.
🎯 What this means for you: If you currently use John’s Facebook page for pre-cruise questions, watch for the new Carnival email address later this month.

MSC Cruises is building more of its biggest ships, extending the World Class program to eight vessels through 2031.
