Hantavirus Passengers Head Home
Five of 18 U.S. MV Hondius passengers leave Nebraska under police escort. They are to remain under home quarantine through June 22 as ship clears to resume Antarctic sailings June 13
Five U.S. MV Hondius passengers have left Nebraska and home quarantine is not what it sounds.
Monitored at the state level. New York, California, Arizona, and Oregon have accepted returning passengers. One 30-year-old New Yorker described a 6 a.m. KN95 pickup, a private flight with medical staff, a police motorcade on arrival, and a state trooper outside with twice-daily check-ins.
MV Hondius cleared to return to service. Dutch officials found the ship clean and rodent-free. Oceanwide Expeditions targets June 13 from Longyearbyen.
Case count holds at 13, including a new mild case in British Columbia in home quarantine.
❓Should mainstream cruisers worry? No. Every confirmed case links to MV Hondius, a small expedition ship on a remote Antarctic itinerary. The WHO, CDC, and ECDC all say mainstream passengers face no elevated risk.

Hiker Found Dead on St. Kitts
Wang Zyuan, 33, confirmed deceased June 1 on Mt. Liamuiga, was missing since May 27 after solo hike during a Royal Caribbean Rhapsody of the Seas port call
Wang Zyuan, 33, was found dead Monday on Mt. Liamuiga, five days after going missing on a solo hike.
He called 911 around 2 p.m. on May 27 to report he was lost, then contact was lost.
Eight agencies, police, Defence Force, Fire and Rescue, K9 teams, and volunteers, searched for days before finding his body. The RSCNPF confirmed the death Monday.
Cause of death not released. Whether Wang was a guest or crew member remains unconfirmed.
❓What should you know before hiking solo at a port? Mt. Liamuiga requires a guide. Steep terrain and dense rainforest make solo navigation genuinely dangerous. Tell someone on the ship your route and return time before leaving the dock.
🧭 TRAVEL HACK
NOTICE
Three Steps Before Any Port Hike
Here's what to do before every independent port excursion
Tell guest services your plan, destination and return time, before leaving. If you don't make it back, the ship knows where to look.
Download the trail offline on AllTrails. Cell coverage on volcanic peaks is unreliable.
Set two alarms for all-aboard time. Miss the ship independently and you pay to reach the next port yourself.
📌 Worth knowing: Ship-sponsored excursions run late? The ship waits. Independent ones? It leaves on schedule.
